Having lost her long-term job as a soap opera writer, single and childless Maria (35) never has any good news to share with her childhood family. She is looking for a new direction in life. She takes a stand-up comedy course and winds up on a comedy contest tour with three other aspiring comedians, all with their own hangups. Life on tour soon proves to have its ups and downs, great gigs and disastrous ones, but bit by bit Maria learns to stand on her own two feet, not just onstage, but offstage too.
