there is no off switch

  • Short Film
  • Germany

there is no off switch is a film about the ghostly nature of modern technologies. Based on a dream, it revolves around themes such as surveillance, paranoia and the statistical eye. The device can be turned off, but the network never sleeps.
The film is part of a wider artistic investigation into the traces we as users leave behind on the internet and what is made of them. Avital Ronell's statement "there is no off switch to technology" that she made in her 1989 book "The Telephone Book" is just as true today, if not more so. When you're online, there is always a data flow, even when that flow is unmarked.
